The Marqués de Riscal Vineyard Hotel is what happens when architect Frank Gehry is influenced by the wine of La Rioja. This luxury hotel is in Elciego, the town/municipality located at the southern part of Álava, in the Basque Country, northern Spain. Gehry incorporated methods previously used in the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. It was built by Ferrovial.
“Depending on who you talk to, the architecture critic of El Pais or the Elciego shopkeeper, the Basque politician or the sunbaked vineyard worker, Gehry’s design erupts with sublime grace or horrific violence”, according to Christopher Petkanas’ in Travel + Leisure.
Innovation in this region is not new. Winemakers cultivated a global revolution with Rioja wines decades ago, building on centuries of tradition and craftsmanship. Our Monasterio de Yuso Reserva is an outstanding example of Spain’s most famous wine.
